Community-Led Urban Engagement Initiative | Capitol Hill, Seattle Circle the Blocks is a community-driven nonprofit initiative designed to strengthen connections between neighbors, local businesses, nonprofits, and city departments through the simple act of walking together. Rooted in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, the program transforms community engagement into an approachable, social, and action-oriented experience.
I developed the visual identity and communication system to reflect the unique character of Capitol Hill, one of Seattle's most diverse, creative, and expressive neighborhoods. Rather than relying on generic volunteer imagery, the illustration style celebrates individuality through a cast of distinct personalities, representing the eclectic mix of residents, artists, entrepreneurs, advocates, and community members who make the neighborhood what it is.

Gather

Meet at a local business and get a quick orientation. Get to know your fellow volunteers.

Collect
Take an hour-long walk around the neighborhood to find or brainstorm ways to improve things.

Collect
We collect data primarily on the Find It Fix It app. This helps solve problems while giving the city valuable data to shape priorities and budgets.

Connect
We'll often have guests from city departments or non-profits. They can see our neighborhood needs and we can collaborate.

The visual language combines playful illustrations, bold typography, and vibrant color palettes to make civic participation feel welcoming, inclusive, and human. Each illustrated character was intentionally designed with unique appearances, clothing, expressions, and body language to reinforce the message that everyone belongs and everyone has a role in shaping their community.

The result is a brand that feels optimistic, accessible, and distinctly Capitol Hill, celebrating diversity, fostering belonging, and empowering residents to become active participants in the future of their neighborhood.
